the date of receipt and acceptance should be inserted later Abstract. We present the results from the high resolution Chandra observation of the Cartwheel galaxy. Many individual sources are resolved in the image, mostly associated with the outer ring. All detected sources have a very high X-ray luminosity (≥ 10 39 erg s −1) that classifies them as Ultra Luminous X-ray sources (ULX). The brightest of them is possibly the most luminous individual non-nuclear source observed so far, with LX ∼ 10 41 erg s −1 (at D=122 Mpc). The spatial extent of this source is consistent with a point source at the Chandra resolution. The luminosity function of individual X-ray sources extends about an order of magnitude higher than previously reported in other galaxies. We discuss this in the context of the " universal " luminosity function for High Mass X-ray Binaries and we derive a Star Formation Rate higher than in other starburst galaxies studied so far. A diffuse component, associated with hot gas, is present. However, deeper observations that we will obtain with XMM-Newton are needed to constrain its properties.

Nonnuclear Hyper/Ultraluminous X-Ray Sources in the Starbursting Cartwheel Ring Galaxy
We report the Chandra/ACIS-S detection of more than 20 ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs, L0.5−10keV > ∼3 × 10 ergs s) in the Cartwheel collisional ring galaxy system, of which over a dozen are located in the outer active star-forming ring. A remarkable hyperluminous X-ray source (HLX, L0.5−10keV > ∼10 ergs s assuming isotropic radiation), which dominates the X-ray emission from the Cartwheel r...

Background: Proton induced X-ray emission (PIXE) has been applied as reliable and improved techniques in this study to compare concentration of various trace elements in normal and abnormal varicose veins. Materials and Methods: Five samples from normal veins and 13 samples from varicose veins bombarded by 2.0 MeV energy proton beams produced by a Van de Graff accelerator in vacuum. T...

متن کاملIntermediate-mass black holes and ultraluminous X-ray sources in the Cartwheel ring galaxy
Chandra and XMM−Newton observations of the Cartwheel galaxy show∼ 17 bright X-ray sources ( > ∼ 5× 10 38 erg s), all within the gas-rich outer ring. We explore the hypothesis that these X-ray sources are powered by intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) accreting gas or undergoing mass transfer from a stellar companion. To this purpose, we run N -body/SPH simulations of the galaxy interaction wh...
متن کاملThe Detection of Nonthermal Radio Continuum Spokes and the Study of Star Formation in the Cartwheel
New sensitive Very Large Array 20 cm continuum observations of the Cartwheel, the prototypical collisional ring galaxy, were carried out with the principal aim of tracing supernova remnants that are expected to lie in the wake of the expanding ring and in the ring itself. We detect predominantly nonthermal radio continuum emission from regions associated with 13 ring Hii complexes. The emission...
